Regional outlook for higher education

  1. Until 2002, North America and Western Europe represented the regions with a large number of tertiary education students.
  2. Since 2003, East Asia and the Pacific is the region with more higher education students.
  3. 46% of the world's students were in the East and South Asian region (Asian Development Bank,)
  4. In 2013:
    1. China: 34 million of higher education students
    2. India: 28.3 million of students
    3. China + India: 33% of all students in the world
    4. Currently, in China and India, a university is being built each week
    5. The United States: 20 million of students
    6. In the EU-28 (508 million) there were 19.6 million tertiary education students (only 3.8%), of which 7.5% were in tertiary short-cycle courses, 60.7% studying a Bachelor of Science, 28.1% master's and 3.7% degrees (Source: the EU)
  5. Africa is today the fastest growing region regarding higher education enrolment.

The case of India

  1. 2028: India will be the most populous country in the world (1,450 million people) (UN).
  2. More than 50% of the population of India (about 600 million people) are under 25 years
  3. Indian middle class (those who can best afford a quality education): 500 million people.
  4. GDP growth rates of 8%: demand for higher education can only grow.
  5. India will soon have the largest population of access age to higher studies in the world
  6. Even if India reach its target of a gross enrolment rate of 30% in the tertiary sector in 2020 (23.9% in 2013), 100 million Indian students will not be able to access higher education.
  7. India will surely become the market with largest opportunities for international higher education providers.
